Grandville hosted their 2nd annual Hunt for a Cure game against Caledonia.  After 4 tough sets, Grandville finished tffhe nail biting fourth set with a 31-29 match victory over Caledonia.  Both teams put up a great fight with each match finishing close in scores, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 31-29.

Grandville started the first set with a 5-0 lead when Caledonia called their first time out.  Grandville lost the rally after the time out, when Caledonia came in with a right side attack that could not be returned.  Grandville maintained the lead throughout the set, finishing with a dig by Ola Nowak, up to setter Kacie Stoneburner, who set up right side hitter Cassidy Chapie for the kill.

The second set was back and forth between the two teams until four forced consecutive errors and then a serve receive error made by Grandville allowed Caledonia to break away with a 23-17 lead.   Grandville was able to gain some points on Caledonia but a huge block by Caledonia finished the second set, Caledonia 25-22.

Caledonia’s energy coming off from the 2nd set rolled right into the 3rd set  when they held the lead throughout the first half of the set with their biggest lead being 17-12. Grandville rallied back and the fire sparked back up after a body sacrificing dig by Morgan Corey resulted in what some volleyball athletes refer to as a “bump kill” on Caledonia’s side.  Grandville closed the gap at 17-17.  Grandville took the lead at 19-18 and finished the set with a kill, tooling off Caledonia’s block by Emily Kirchhoff 25-21.

The fourth set was definitely a nail biting set for any fans in the stands.  It appeared Caledonia was going to take the set as the score was in their favor 24-21 and just needed one point to close it out, but Grandville was not going down without a fight.  Caledonia served on 24-21 with a powerful return out of Grandvilles right side by Ola Nowak with the kill.  Nowak then went back to the serving line, point 23 came from an error by Caledonia, then. tying the game at 24-24 with a service ace by Nowak.   Grandville took their first lead of the game 25-24 after a line shot by Kirchhoff. The rally ended after a service error, tying the game again at 25-25. Grandvilles defense played at the top of their game, as a ball was not getting past them without some sort of touch.  Grandville took the lead two more times at 26-25, 27-26 before Caledonia stepped out with the lead at 28-27, but served the ball into the net allowing the fifth tie of the set at 28-28.  Nowak put the ball down after a high set by Stoneburner regaining the lead for the fourth time at 29-28.  Caledonia returned the ball out of the left side  down the line tying back up at 29-29, but Grandville quickly returned their serve with a kill ran from behind Stoneburner by middle hitter Sarah Orme for the last lead of the game at 30-29.  Grandville finished the set strong, you couldn’t ask for a better performance as far as communication, movement, and passes which allowed for the perfect set back to Cassidy Chapie to finish the set with a kill, ending the set Grandville 31-29.

Grandville is now 2-2 in conference and 19-13-2 overall. Their next match up is at home against Rockford on the 11th.
